Timpanelli, who had served as president of the Business Council from 1988 to 2016, was previously the elected first selectman for the Town of Trumbull. His distinguished business career and service has spanned philanthropic, academic, health care, civic and governmental organizations.

“We couldn’t be happier about Paul’s coming on board," said Mark Appelberg, executive director at Great River. "Great River is going through a major transition with our new relationship with Sacred Heart University. Improvements to the course and facility, new value-based membership options and the prestige of being home to Division I golf teams are some of the positive developments.”

Appelberg added, "We strongly believe our club will now be the ideal setting for corporate membership for both business and leisure. Who better than Paul to lead that charge?”

Great River's ownership changed hands in 2015. Sacred Heart and Great River management have adopted a new strategic vision designed to provide golf enthusiasts the best course, facility and member value in the region.

Included in the plan is the goal to become a first-class home for businesses looking to hold events, entertain clients and reward or honor employees, according to a release from Great River Golf Club.

“As a graduate of Sacred Heart University, I am thrilled to now have an exciting opportunity to continue to build the solid reputation of the school and each of its assets," Timpanelli said. "Great River clearly is one of those assets, and I look forward to helping it continue to build its first-class reputation among our regional corporate community."

Timpanelli is the recipient of numerous business and community service awards, including the 2009 Bridgeport Public Education Fund, Elizabeth Pfriem Community Leadership Award and the 2016 United Way Norman Leeds Giving Back to the Community Award.

Great River Golf Club is a semi-private club located in Milford. It was recently named second in the state by Golfing Magazine, third in the state by Golfweek and fourth by Golf Magazine.

Great River is affiliated with Sacred Heart University and serves as home to both its men’s and women’s golf teams.
