“I’m a barber by trade, but this is what I do to relax,” Logan said Saturday at her table inside Shelton's Handmade Market.
Logan owns Hipponotic Candle, which specializes in soy-based candles. During Saturday’s market day, she sold meditation candles and candles designed for Valentine’s Day.
Each meditation candle pairs with an app called Gnarl that provides calming sounds for meditation. Logan’s husband designed the app along with the art for the candles’ labels.
Logan, who started selling at the market nearly two years ago, said she enjoys her time in the halls of the downtown Conti Building, where the market is held.
“I have a lot of fun,” she said. “I love meeting people, talking with them.” The live music, which “is always changing,” is also a plus, she said.
Logan is a passionate candlemaker, but she also cares deeply about the hippopotamus. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of her candles benefit the Turgue Hippo Trust. Logan said she became inspired to help save them from poaching after reading “A Hippo Love Story” by Karen Paolillo.
“She’s an amazing woman,” Logan said of Paolillo, who has visited the hippos in Africa. Logan said that one day she would love to visit the hippos, too.
Logan is one of the many vendors inside the market, which permanently houses boutique shops, a bookstore, a gym for kids and a cafe, according Jimmy Tickey, a co-founder of the market.
Tickey, who was selling T-shirts and welcoming visitors by the market’s front entrance, said it has great vendors who sell quality wares. It also has plenty of customers, he said.
“It’s been a great turnout,” he said.
