A 'Sweet' Partnership For Bridgeport Flower Shop And Fairfield Candy Store

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The old-fashioned cash register behind the desk at Rudy’s Flower Shop in Bridgeport complete with free lollipops in front should be the first clue you’ve walked into a bit of a time warp. Liz DeFeo, who owns the shop, says a lot of folks come by and say, “Wow, you’re still here” to which she proudly replies, “Fifty years and counting.”

“I believe we’re the oldest family-owned flower shop in Bridgeport,” she says. DeFeo credits the shop’s longevity – it’s been in existence since 1961 – to its Old World values and charm. That, plus she knows every customer having “practically grown up” in the family-owned business.

The store still has house accounts that work on the trust system. As a Bridgeport native who has helped celebrate every birthday, wedding and funeral with most folks in the community, DeFeo can always put together a bouquet or arrangement to someone’s personal preference.

Mums, sunflowers and gerberas are among the popular choices at the moment, though holiday bouquets (the place is set up for Christmas!) have overtaken the space. Among the store’s everyday specials: A dozen red roses for $12, cash and carry.
