WESTPORT, Conn. — Making healthy choices on-the-go is easier in Westport thanks to the arrival of Freshii, a new restaurant that opened Monday downtown.
The restaurant, located in Parker Harding Plaza next to Starbucks, is a “fast-casual” chain that provides fresh, healthy and energizing meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, owner Jonathan Blob said.
“Freshii was founded under the premise that people should be able to eat fast and healthy food at the same time,” said Blob, a Greenwich resident. “People are excited we’re here. Many people have told me this is something that’s been missing in town.”
The Freshi menu is broken into categories: salads and wraps; rice, quinoa and noodle bowls; soups; burritos; and breakfast.
Someone in the mood for a burrito can order the Baja, which is made with quinoa, avocado, red onions, cilantro, green onions, cabbage, salsa and pico de gallo. Or they can try the Bangkok—made with brown rice, spinach, cucumbers, mushrooms, carrots, bean sprouts and peanut sauce.
Bowl options include choices like the Teriyaki Twist, which is brown rice with broccoli, carrots, edamame, cucumber, green onions, sesame seeds, crispy wontons and teriyaki sauce. Another option is the Warrior, a mix of brown rice, corn, red onions, tomatoes, carrots, Cajun spice and ranch dressing.
For breakfast, options include grilled burritos and grilled egg pockets, like the spinach, mushroom and cheese pocket with scrambled eggs, roasted peppers and goat cheese. a variety of cooked organic oatmeal is also on the menu.
“Everything is made fresh to order, right in front of you,” Blob said.
Customers hungry for something not on the menu can custom-build their own dish with the "fast ticket" option. Using the fast ticket sheet, customers start by picking their base: salad, wrap, bowl or soup. From there, they can decide to add a protein, like tofu, chicken, steak or shrimp. The last steps involve selecting the toppings, dressings and sauces.
“We can make anything they want with what we have in store,” Blob said. “As expected, this has been very popular—people have fun custom-making their dishes.”
To assist customers in building-their-own masterpiece, there's a "periodic table of food elements" on the wall, which not only shows all the ingredients used in store, but lists the benefits of each ingredient, Blob said.
Freshii also specializes in making fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies, also made fresh to order, Blob said.
The restaurant is currently open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are entrances from Parker Harding Plaza and 19 Post Road E. In the spring, there will be an outdoor seating area on the sidewalk in front of the Post Road entrance with seating for 20 to 25 people, Blob said.
Freshii was founded in 2005 by Matthew Corrin in Toronto. There are now more than 70 locations in eight countries.
The Westport store is the first in the state and the region, said Blob—who purchased the franchise rights for Fairfield County and Westchester County. Over the next several years, he plans to open five to 10 stores. Future locations may include Fairfield, Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton and Stamford.
