The 168,000-square-foot center is the largest server warehouse in Connecticut, the company says. It is Cervalis’s second site in Fairfield County and is more than three times the size of its first center in Stamford.
“This unparalleled operations center can serve as a primary production data center, a backup data center or a hybrid solution for firms that rely on active-active computing environments,” said Michael Boccardi, president and CEO of Cervalis. “Many New York City firms have joined our New England-based clients at our other Connecticut facility, and I expect that trend to continue.”
Cervalis is an information technology company with corporate headquarters in Shelton. It also has data centers in New York State and New Jersey to go along with its two in Connecticut.
The centers house large groups of computer servers, which allow Cervalis to host corporate and personal websites and manage a cloud data storage for businesses around the world. The company’s business also includes data security and network management.
The new Norwalk facility also includes 30,000 square feet set aside for “disaster recovery seating” for clients to use to get their systems back online in case of a major emergency. Boccardi says part of the data center’s appeal will be its ability to stay active even in cases of “unusual weather patterns.”
The data center has a number of features to prevent against natural disasters. Servers are stored on a 75,000-square-foot raised structure that puts them over the 500-year flood mark designated by FEMA. It also has redundant power served by two different utilities and a 3,500-ton cooling system.
“In recent years, many Connecticut businesses have battled not only natural disasters – Snowtober, Hurricane Sandy – but also the significant business interruptions that followed,” Boccardi said. “Cervalis is committed to protecting businesses against these costly interruptions, and we designed our Norwalk facility to allow businesses continuity through access to dedicated work area recovery.”
