BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Bridgeport Hospital announced an 'extraordinary' gift from an anonymous donor will allow the hospital's Joel E. Smilow Heart Institute to build a new hybrid operating room.

Plans are for the new operating room to concentrate on minimally invasive cardiac procedures like transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and hybrid ablation for atrial fibrillation (A-fib).

The donor requested their name and amount donated be kept confidential.

“We are extremely grateful for this gift, which along with contributions from other donors, promises to improve cardiac care for many residents of the greater Bridgeport area,” said Bridgeport Hospital Foundation president Stephen Jakab in a statement.

The new room will allow doctors to work on patients closer to home; now patients are ferried between Bridgeport Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

“Cardiac patients will benefit from potentially life-saving procedures, performed in a minimally invasive manner with less pain, faster recovery times and improved outcomes,” said hospital chief of cardiovascular services Stuart Zarich. “This gift will significantly upgrade the technology and facilities needed to deliver the highest quality medical services.”

It will include 3D imaging services and allow a collaboration between cardiologists, vascular surgeons and cardiac surgeons, which wasn't possible in the hospital's current TAVR clinic. The TAVR procedure uses a catheter through the leg to place an aortic valve, and it can be a sensitive surgery.

Plans are for the new room to be ready next year.
