Poll: Fairfield Chamber Cancels Halloween Events Due To Volunteer Shortage

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The annual Halloween "Trick or Trunk" and "Trick or Treat on Safety Street" events staged by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce have been canceled this year because of a lack of volunteers.

The last time Fairfield Chamber of Commerce held a Trick or Treat on Safety Street event was in 2011, the event was cancelled in 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy.

The chamber said it won't be holding the annual events this year because it does not have the manpower needed.

Last year, the event were canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. The town picked up the baton and moved to the events to the Fairfield Metro Train Station.

"The event has grown beyond what we can handle at this time, and it really is that we're going through our own transition," said Beverly Balaz, executive director of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. "That doesn't mean we won't revisit it again next year, but we just couldn't do it this year."

The chamber is going through a transition of its own this year, she said. When looking at the calendar, the group determined that the Halloween events couldn't be handled, Balaz said.

"The town thanked us for our years in doing this," she said. "But we just couldn't manage it this year."

Santa's Arrival will still take place on Nov. 30, she said. The Chamber will be participating in Small Business Saturday that same day.

The Halloween events, normally held downtown and on Sherman Green, are only a few of the holiday programs put on by the chamber every year.
