Uberti's Fish Market Lures In Loyal Customers In Stratford

STRATFORD, Conn. — Uberti's Fish Market of Stratford has been selling fresh fish and serving up a full menu of delights from the sea for two decades now, and Rob Uberti has taken the reins from his father.

Rob Uberti told Daily Voice that his father, Bob, opened the shop in 1996, having had an earlier location in Milford, in the early '80s.

Now the Stratford store is entirely in Rob's hands, since his father sold it to him and moved to Florida a year ago. "But we are still a family-run operation; there's always a family member here," he said.

Rob Uberti is now the third generation to bring tastes from the sea to the area. His grandfather, Jim "Jumbo" Uberti, opened a fish-and-chips place in Milford in the '50s.

The current Uberti's Fish Market has both a full fish-and-chips menu — from which customers can take out, eat inside or nosh out on the patio when the weather cooperates — as well as a full-service fresh seafood market.

On the market side, Uberti said the shop is known for its wild salmon and cooked shrimp. The holidays really bring in new customers, as well, he said. "We get more customers every year, after people have our shrimp on holiday platters."

He also noted that they're more old-school than some markets: "Our fish cutters cut six days a week, and I go into the city at least three days a week."

The shop buys fish whole and fillets them in-house.

Folks also have a variety of call-ahead options, including having lobster cooked and waiting for you, as one of the many enthusiastic Yelp reviewers notes.

On the fish-and-chips side, Uberti's is, unsurprisingly, best known for its fish and chips. In both 2013 and 2014, the shop took top state honors for them, in Connecticut Magazine.

The magazine raved that the fish and chips are top notch, fish is fresh-caught and nothing is processed.

Also, unlike some seafood shacks which are only open in the summer, both the fish-and-chips and market sides of the shop are open year-round.
