Curley, who lives on the Westport/Norwalk border, knows his cocktails. He was one of the original four people that launched SVEDKA Vodka in the late 90's, and admits he was always a closet gin drinker.
So, in July 2015 he launched Gin Lane 1751 in Europe, bringing it to the U.S. market in July 2016.
What makes the gin different, he said, is that it's "a classic Victorian-style spirit from an age when there was a dominance of juniper berries and star anise," basically a "gin for gin lovers."
Many other gins, he explained, use more new-age botanicals like cucumber essence, hibiscus, and spearmint. His product, on the other hand, is finely macerated with hints of licorice and Mediterranean citrus and is comprised of the eight most traditional botanicals (think juniper, orris root, Seville oranges, angelica, Sicilian lemon, star anise, cassia bark and coriander).
"It relies on a recipe that's based on some of the earliest recipes of English gin from the 1700s," he said.
The Stamford-based company has four varietals that hark back to the way the British consumed their favorite tipple way back when.
They include:
- Gin Lane 1751, London Dry Gin (40% ABV/80proof): Classic, full-bodied with a delicate balance of juniper and citrus notes.
- Gin Lane 1751, a London Dry ‘Royal Strength’ Gin (47% ABV/94proof): The higher alcohol content allows botanicals to further release, giving off more pronounced flavors.
- Gin Lane 1751, a ‘Victoria’ Pink Gin (40% ABV/80proof): Full-bodied with an infusion of naturally blended Angostura bitters and Gin Lane 175,
- Old Tom Gin (40% ABV/80proof): Features a smooth, full-flavored taste with a softer and slightly sweet profile.
All of the spirits are routed in gin’s historic journey that date to The Gin Act of 1751, a story that Curley can enthusiastically tell about how gin was banned and then embraced (Google it).
The bottom line, said Curley, is that Gin Lane 1751 is as authentic and legitimate as you can get.
His mission? To make it an "accessible craft" brand that can stand against gins that are double and triple the price point.
