Barnum Museum Honors Animals In Spring Series Programs

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Beginning in March and continuing throughout May, The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport will be hosting an array of animal focused family-friendly programs with the theme for the spring series "Animals in American Life: Pets, Performers, and Zoos."

All the programs relating to animals are funded in part by a grant from the State of Connecticut Humanities Council. Check the museum website, barnummuseun.org, for any weather related cancellations or changes to programming. 

  • "Victorian Pets: Arts and Artifacts in The Barnum Museum Collection" is a sneak peek program designed to teach you about pet stories of the past and will be presented by Adrienne Saint-Pierre, curator of the museum. The event is on Wednesday, March 4, at 12:15 p.m. No registration required and a $3 donation is suggested. Patrons are encouraged to bring lunch. 
  • "Pets in America: A Surprising History," by Dr. Katherine C. "Kasey" Grier of the University of Delaware, will talk about the evolution of domesticated pets and how they become companions and members of households across America. She will also discuss previous issues pet owners faced including population control and disease. Preceding the lecture will be a short presentation by the founder of A Hand for A Paw, Jimmy Gonzalez, an organization that helps care for pets of low-income pet owners. The event is on Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. No registration is required. A donation of $5 is suggested, as well as a pet food donation to help supply AHFAP's pet food pantry.
  • "Elephants in the Room: Stories of Elephant Artifacts and Images in The Barnum Museum's Collection" is a sneal peek presented by Adrienne Saint-Pierre. This program will focus on elephant artifacts, including a taxidermy baby elephant, an elephant tusk, photographs and more. The program is on Wednesday, April 8, at 12:15 p.m. No registration required and a donation of $3 is suggested. Patrons are encouraged to bring lunch.
  • "Jumbo: Marvel, Myth, and Legend," by Dr. Andrew McClellan of Tufts University, is a program that explores the life of Jumbo the elephant. His image is featured on advertisements and his legacy continues on today. The event is on Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. No registration is required and a donation of $5 is suggested.
