Fairfield Holding Hazardous Waste Collection At Veterans Park

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The annual household hazardous waste collection for Fairfield will be held Saturday, Aug. 29 at Veterans Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fairfield is a member of HazWaste Central. Since May 1990, towns and cities in the group have recycled and disposed of more than a million gallons of waste.

Volunteers will be needed from 8:30  to 11:30 am and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help with collection but will not be handling hazardous waste.

Items that can be dropped off include: Aerosols, Antifreeze, Paints, Auto Batteries, Batteries, Bug Sprays, Auto Body Repair Products, Chemical Fertilizer, Brake Fluid, Dry Cleaning Solvents, Drain Cleaners, Gasoline, Fungicides, Latex Paint, Herbicides, Furniture Polish, Insecticides, Metal Polish, Oil-Based Paint,  Moth Balls, Paint Thinner, Photographic Chemicals, Oven Cleaners, Paint Stripper, Rat Poison, Transmission Fluid, Swimming Pool Chemicals and Varnish.

Items that will not be accepted include: ammunition, asbestos roofing, shingling, flooring, wallboard and pipe wrap, controlled substances, narcotics and prescription medicines, empty containers including aerosol cans, explosives including road and boat flares, fire extinguishers, medical waste including syringes, PCBs, radioactive materials, tires and waste generated by commercial, industrial, institutional or municipal sources.
