The event is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13 who will not be 14 by April 1. There are three age groups: 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13, with boys and girls competing separately.

The contest is free and open to all area town residents, including Westport, Redding, Weston, Fairfield and Easton.

Registration for the 8-9 age group is by 10:15 a.m.; 10-11 should arrive by 10:45 a.m.; and the 12-13 group by 11:30 a.m.

Each contestant will take 25 free throws to determine the winner in each of the three age groups. The 8-9 participants shoot from a line four feet closer to the basket.

The six winners in the event will then compete in the district finals, also to be hosted by the Fairfield Elks Lodge at Fairfield Warde High School on Jan. 11, where the winners from the other towns in the district will convene to vie for a spot in the state finals.

Nationwide, nearly 3 million boys and girls enter for a chance to advance through local, district, state and regional contests culminating in national championships held in Springfield in April.

Four locals have reached the nationals in the 40 years the contest has been held: Cathy McGillicuddy, Dan Pangrazio. J.D. Fetcho and Matt Doyle.
