Fairfield’s One Book One Town Authors To Speak At Quick Center

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The monthlong celebration of Fairfield’s One Book One Town events will culminate with an appearance by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett, the authors of "A House in the Sky," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University.

Lindhout and Corbett will discuss this extraordinary work and then be on hand to sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase at the event. The book is recommended for mature audiences due to its subject matte.

This critically acclaimed memoir tells the story of Lindhout, who as a child escaped a violent household by paging through issues of “National Geographic” and imagining herself in its exotic locales.

Aspiring to understand the world and live a significant life, she later backpacked through Latin America and Southeast Asia. Emboldened, she went on to war-torn regions, including Sudan, Syria and Pakistan, carving out a fledgling career as a reporter in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2008, she traveled to Somalia, “the most dangerous place on earth.” On her fourth day, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road.

Held hostage for 460 days, Lindhout converts to Islam as a survival tactic and eventually risks a daring escape. Moved between abandoned houses in the desert, she survives on memory, strategy, fortitude, and hope. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains and tortured.

The Fairfield Public Library presents the program along with its community partners: Pequot Library, Fairfield University, Fairfield University Bookstore and Fairfield Museum and History Center.

Advance registration is required to attend. The program is free. For more information and to register for this event call 203-256-3160, or visit the library on the web at .
