Fairfield County Cold Cases Show Up On Cards

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – For the past several years, the state Department of Correction has been employing a unique system to gather information on cold cases. It has distributed playing cards.

A second edition of the deck was released Wednesday, all with photos of unsolved murders and missing person cases. The department issues the decks to inmates of Connecticut’s prisons in hopes of soliciting information about the cases.

According to a press release, more than 200 tips were sent in after the original deck of cards was handed out, and 51 of the 52 cards show new cases. The repeated case involves a New Britain murder victim whose identity was unknown in the first deck.

“The cold case playing cards have provided a valuable tool to assist investigators working to solve cases and achieve justice for the victims of these crimes, their families and the people of Connecticut,” Chief State’s Attorney Kevin Kane said in a news release. “I applaud the Department of Corrections for its support of this innovative effort to help our cold case units, which have achieved remarkable results from their efforts.”

The cards are produced by the Cold Case unit in the state’s attorney’s office.

"We are confident that among the state's inmate population is information that these cards will bring forth, that will result in solving some of these crimes and bringing a degree of closure to the loved ones of these 52 individuals," said Leo Arnone, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Correction.

Between the two decks, only four cases are from Fairfield County. All are pictured.
