Series curator and Playhouse associate artist Anne Keefe will direct the pair.
Herrmann's long and distinguished career includes three Tony Award nominations and multiple roles in film and television. His past work with Westport Country Playhouse includes an appearance in “A Holiday Garland” and Script in Hand playreadings of “Morning’s at Seven” and “A Song at Twilight.”
He currently can be seen on a recurring role on CBS' “The Good Wife,” and recently provided the voice of Franklin D. Roosevelt for Ken Burns' PBS documentary series, “The Roosevelts.”
Trained at the Juilliard School, Cespedes appeared on Broadway in “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” and has appeared on film in “The Way I Remember It,” starring Christine Ebersole.
The plot of “Trying” features Herrmann as Francis Biddle, a former attorney general under President Franklin Roosevelt. The story is set in 1967 and '68, as Biddle hires Sarah Schorr (Cespedes), a young Canadian woman, to help him write his memoirs at the tail end of his life.
Glass based the drama on her own personal experiences, and the play has earned accolades, winning Chicago's Jefferson Award for Best New Play in 2004. A production was mounted in New York that same year. The Saskatoon native also recently completed a screenplay based on the play.
