Two students were taken to Hackensack Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital in Rockland, one with abdominal injuries and the other with head, arm and rib injuries, after the 12:11 a.m. crash, Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said.
The driver of the 1993 Honda Civic, 20-year-old Douglas Hervey of West Milford (photo, above), was charged with assault by auto, DWI, driving underage after consuming alcohol, reckless driving and failing to keep right, the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. He declined treatment at the scene, the chief said.
His two passengers — one 21 years old of Sparta and the other 20 of Mahwah — were found by police on the ground outside the cars, Batelli said. Because one had serious injuries, a medevac helicopter was placed on standby, but it was later cancelled, he said.
The driver of the other car, a 2010 Ford Edge (above), told police that he was headed south on Woods Road when he saw the other vehicle coming down him.
“He did not have time to react, and his car was struck head-on,” Batelli said.
His seatbelt was on and his airbag deployed, sparing the driver from serious injury, the chief said.
“I was so surprised no one got killed after seeing the cars,” one college source said, in a CLIFFVIEW PILOT in a report published this morning. “He REALLY could have killed someone.”
Police were back at the campus less than two hours later after an argument over a girl.
“A large group of fraternity brothers gathered and there was some pushing and shoving,” Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, “but no one wanted to sign complaints and the crowd disbursed.
“Security escorted one of the involved parties back to his apartment to prevent any problems.”
Batelli’s officers also responded to a call of a depressed student who was threatening suicide. They spoke to her and her roommate, he said.
“The girl stated she had a gun but it was never located,” the chief said. “The roommate never saw it or heard of her having it before.”
The depressed girl “denied having any weapon,” he said.
She was taken to The Valley Hospital for evaluation.
“Neither of these incidents resulted in any arrests and were resolved without further incident and turned over to College Administration for review and action at the appropriate level,” Batelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
