Grisman, who is best known as a bluegrass mandolinist, turns 71 on Wednesday, March 23.
Grisman started his musical career in 1963, as a member of Even Dozen Jug Band. It was there he received the nickname of "Dawg" from Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia.
Grisman and Garcia's friendship was later chronicled in the documentary, "Grateful Dawg."
Grisman's song Dawggy Mountain Breakdown was the opening theme of NPR's Automotive Talk Show Car Talk.
