Local Dancers Raise Thousands For Yorktown's Support Connection

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Four local dance studios held a dance and fundraising event that raised more than $9,000 for Support Connection, Inc., a Yorktown-based not-for-profit that provides free, confidential support services and programs to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer.

“Dancers Against Cancer” took place on Friday, Feb. 19, at John F. Kennedy High School in Somers. It was spearheaded by Alexis Menendez, owner Street Beatz Studio (Cortlandt Manor), after the mother of one of her students shared how much Support Connection had helped her cope with her own breast cancer diagnosis.

Menendez reached out to three other studios in the area to join the cause: Spotlight Studios of Dance and Performing Arts (Mahopac), Dance Expression (Peekskill) and Star Struck Dance Studio (Mohegan Lake).

Dancers as well as instructors from all four studios performed to a full house of dance enthusiasts and supporters. Many volunteers helped plan and execute the event.

In addition to ticket sales, there were raffles to raise funds and add to the excitement. Katherine Quinn, Support Connection Executive Director, was at the event and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support: “This event was such a gift to us. We are so grateful to everyone involved, for believing in us and for raising these funds which will have a significant positive impact on the lives of many people who are facing a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis.”
