Pequot Library's Summer Book Sale Offers Unique Finds

SOUTHPORT, Conn. -- It’s probably the only library book sale in America that starts, literally, with a bang.

A first edition copy of Harper Lee's . "To Kill a Mockingbird" is among the special items featured at this year's Pequot Library book sale.

On Friday, July 24, the cannon will sound and book lovers will sprint to the overladen tables at the Pequot Library’s annual event.

The sale, which continues until Tuesday, July 28, draws people from as far away as California, the library says.

This year, more than 120,000 books, CDs, DVDs and records are up for grabs. Rare and unusual items will be located in one room and a catalog of “specials” is now available online at www.pequotlibrary.org.

The “specials” include, the library says, a first edition copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This is especially timely since Lee’s second book “Go Set a Watchman” hit the shelves this week -- 55 years after she published her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. There also are books signed by Colin Powell and Douglas MacArthur.

Sale hours are: July 24, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., July 25-27, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and July 28, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The final day of the sale is a bargain-hunter's paradise; books are $5 a bagful.

The library is at 720 Pequot Ave., Southport.
