Scheherazade, a young woman accomplished in the studies of arts and philosophy, volunteers to spend a night with the King, who had a reputation of taking a new wife every day and beheading her the morning after they married. Every night, she would weave a tale by reciting a portion of a story without giving away the ending. The King would spare her life in order to hear the end of the story the next evening. The King spared her life for 1,000 nights and ultimately fell in love with her.

Musical Director Eckart Preu says, “Rimsky-Korsakov’s 'Scheherazade' is one of the biggest Russian pieces there is. It is something that will sweep you away…..so, I am really proud to put a big orchestra on stage so that everyone is blown away.”

In addition, prize-winning international pianist Jeffrey Kahane will play Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with the Stamford Symphony.

Kahane has established an international reputation as a truly versatile artist. Since making his Carnegie Hall debut in 1983, he  has given recitals in many of the nation's major music centers, including New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Atlanta.

He appears as soloist with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony and is also a popular figure at all of the major U.S. summer festivals.

Tickets to Sunday’s concert are free for anyone under the age of 18, with an accompanying adult.

Young concertgoers ages 7-12 are invited to arrive early on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a fun and free program called MusiKids that will feature soloist Jeffrey Kahane and prepare the kids for what they can expect and experience at the concert.

Concertgoers are invited to Behind the Baton, pre-concert at the Palace Theatre to hear Preu speak about musical highlights of the pieces, stories about the composers and interesting historical facts. Kahane will also be making an appearance.

Behind the Baton is open to all ticketholders and begins one hour prior to each concert.
