The Garrick Ohlsson Recital will take place at Stamford’s Palace Theatre. His program is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the death of Alexander Scriabin, and he will be performing a selection of works by the composer that bridged the romantic and modern eras. He will be also be performing works by Scriabin’s Russian counterparts, Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff.

In continuation with Stamford Symphony's partnership with The Hartt School of Music, three outstanding piano students from the Hartt School have been chosen to participate in a master class with Ohlsson the day before his recital. The piano students will each choose a piece of music to perform and will receive a 40 minute personal coaching session.

Ohlsson began his piano studies at age 8 at the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains. By age 13, he entered the Juilliard School, in New York City. In 1970, Ohlsson won the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw (he is the single American to have done so). This triumph brought him worldwide recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation.

He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and most recently in 2014, he was the recipient of the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano performance from Northwestern University Bienen School of Music

A post-concert dessert in the upper lobby of the Palace Theatre with Ohlsson will be available for Stamford Symphony subscribers for $20.
