WESTPORT, Conn. - Hair gets colorful this season with trends tending toward bright, bold and even multi-colored styles. Popular with teens, ‘tweens and the style savvy moms who love them, this hot hair trend is multi-generational, too.
There is more than one way to introduce pastels and brights into your more natural locks. Some require a professional’s assistance, while others are quick, easy, DIY solutions that wash out in the shower.
If you’re not committing to your color, all you’ll need are some artists’ pastels. (Remember the smudgy sticks in pretty colors from middle school art class?) Steer clear of the oil-based pastels, or drier chalks. Section off the hair you want to color and pull it taught. Then run the pastel along the hair until the color begins to stick. Pull hair through a flat iron or curling iron to set. If your hair is darker to begin with, try chalking your hair when it is damp. Once you’re over it, just wash it out. You can throw in some new colors the very next day.
But some women are ready to commit to brighter color that lasts, in the form of something hairstylists call dip dying. “You don’t have to be a punk rocker, alternative chick or under 30 to dip dye,” says Anne Greenberg, a Westport mom of two and fan of the new hair trend. “The best part about it is that if you don’t like it, you can cut it off or dye back to plain old boring brown in a second. Right now, I’m wearing a mixture of shocking pink, turquoise and purple. And I’m 37 years young!”
To accomplish her color, Greenburg purchased the dye herself. “I used Manic Panic,” she says of the semi-permanent dye. Greenberg then went to a hairdresser who bleached the ends of her naturally chestnut brown hair, readying it to receive the brighter colors. Afterwards, the stylist painted on the bold colors and wrapped the hair in foils to set the color. Then, the foils come off, the hair is rinsed, and you're beach-ready with your new 'do.
Whether you want to rock this trend day after day, or just once in awhile, there's a way to make it work for you.

I think it looks pretty and it's fun, as long as it's done right! I'm planning my daughter's 5-yr birthday party in July and I'm doing a girly makeover fashion show for her and her friends and I never would've thought of using artists' pastels --- so thank you for the info! Now if I can only get their moms to sign permission slips to USE the pastels.... ;-)
