The shelter is hosting a benefit dinner to support the fund drive May 27 at Vazzano’s Four Seasons in Stratford. All proceeds will go to the $40,000 goal.

“Our goal is to have the highest adoption rate in the state and I think it’s achievable, especially when we give them resources like these outdoor play areas,” said Jennifer Wallace, chief animal control officer. “We believe that getting these play areas constructed will allow us to provide a better quality of life for these dogs while they wait to find their forever homes.”

The shelter can house up to 80 dogs and, under current conditions, they can only go outside if they are walked on a leash, which is not always possible every day, Wallace said.

In 2016, Bridgeport Animal Control received approval to build the play areas. They would allow the dogs to have safe, social fun and reduce stress as they wait for new homes.

The May 27 event begins at 7 p.m. and includes dinner, entertainment, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and more. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Tickets are $50. For tickets, visit eventbrite.com.
