NORWALK, Conn. -- While there is a growing awareness of the dangers of texting while driving, it unfortunately hasn't done much to dissuade drivers from indulging.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2014, 18 percent of injury crashes and 16 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic accidents were recorded as distraction-affected.

With distractions at every turn, how does a driver avoid becoming a victim? Norwalk-based Croce Transmission Specialists list the best ways to keep focus behind the wheel.

  • Before starting the ignition, make a habit of sending pressing texts or making important calls. There should be less of a motivation to check the phone during a car ride if the most time-sensitive calls and texts are already done.
  • It's also important to take a look down the road in order to chart safe paths around potentially troublesome events. Once a problem is spotted, it's often just a matter of taking corrective measures to avoid crashes and other serious situations.
  • Scanning the road ahead provides drivers with more time to make decisions and control their vehicles. Under normal conditions, expert drivers scan 20-30 seconds ahead and at highway speeds, this translates to about a half-mile.
  • If you absolutely cannot wait to check a text or call, pull over to a safe place to avoid a serious accident.

When people use their cell phones while driving, they are putting themselves and others in danger, so put the phones away on the road! For more tips on highway safety, visit the Croce Transmission Specialists website.
