Bird Lover's Legacy Lives On At Regional Hospice And Home Care In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. -- John Sinnock was always a nature lover, with an affinity for birds in particular. In his final days fighting Parkinson's disease at Regional Hospice and Home Care in Danbury, his family decided to honor his life in the most fitting way possible: by donating two birdhouses to the landscaped grounds.

Thanks to the Sinnock family, residents at Regional Hospice and Home Care in Danbury can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature up close.

According to family, the pride of John and his wife Dianne Lastoria's Bridgewater, Conn. home was their beautiful garden, which included a wood duck house and bluebird house sitting atop a long pole. Thanks to his height, he had a great view of the birds as they’d come and go. “The birds were a great source of pleasure for him,” said Ann Sinnock, John's sister-in-law.

Sinnock enjoyed a long career as a math teacher, first in Massachusetts, then at Litchfield High School, and finally at Central Connecticut State University. “He had a gentle nature and touched many lives,” said Sinnock's brother, James. This was evident in the tremendous outpouring of support upon his death.

During his last days, Sinnock was comfortably surrounded by friends and family at RHHC. “We have a large family, but there was enough room at RHHC for everyone to spend comfortable time with John," said Lastoria. "We used the living rooms to relax and loved being able to get food from the kitchen. All of the needs of the family were met without having to go anywhere,” she said. “It's a wonderful place and it's a great thing that we have it here.”

Now, thanks to the Sinnock family's generosity, the beautiful view John enjoyed each day includes two bird houses just as his own home did. These reminders bring joy and comfort to current patients and their families, providing a retreat in the same way it helped John and his loved ones.
