FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield YMCA, a branch of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, has been selected as one of three finalists to win a new sports floor for its facility.

For the past two months, Gerflor USA, a leader in resilient sports-floor manufacturing, gathered nominations from the public for schools or community centers across the country to win a new Taraflex gym floor through its Play Safe on Taraflex program.

The finalists, which also include Summit Elementary in Ashland, Ky., and Anderson Middle School in Anderson, Calif., were selected from more than 50 submissions and chosen by a jury of five respected professionals.

To determine a winner, a public voting period is open through Wednesday, Nov. 23. The nominees were evaluated based on financial need, condition of the current playing surface and facility and the nomination statement. To vote for one of the finalists, visit Gerflor USA’s Facebook page.

The winner will receive a Taraflex floor, the world’s most widely specified sports surface due to its safety and performance properties, and the same flooring selected for 10 consecutive Olympic Games through Gerflor’s partnerships with IHF and FIVB, according to a release from the Fairfield Y.

Due to the damage it sustained from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the Fairfield YMCA is in dire need of a new gym floor.

“Our gym is definitely in need of an update as it is rather old and the floor is rubber,” said Christian Engle, chief operating officer of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA. “A few years ago, Hurricane Sandy caused significant damage to our facility. Due to flooding, we moved the fitness center from the basement to the gym area – taking up half the gym space. Safety is our priority; a new gym floor would help boost program opportunities and help drive people to participate in our community-based programs.”

Taraflex is a leader in indoor sports flooring for U.S. schools and is installed in more than 70,000 gymnasiums worldwide, the release said.
