Fairfield Country Day Camps Offer Variety And Flexibility

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- It’s usually all fun and games at Fairfield Country Day School's Summer Fun Camp, but last year, the school added a twist that incorporated hands-on experiences for boys and girls entering grades 4-9.

Fairfield Country Day School offers two different programs. The Summer Fun program for boys and girls entering grades K-6 includes a traditional camp environment with pool time, games, sports and scavenger hunts.

The school also hosts Curiosity In Action, the new program it introduced last year for boys and girls entering grades 4-9. In this program, kids learn survival skills and are also given the opportunity to explore gaming, technology, languages, and arts.

“Curiosity In Action is nice to have for the older kids,’’ said J.J. Van Ess, a Fairfield Country Day alum who now works in the school’s business office. “They’re not doing the same thing as the Summer Fun kids. They get a more honed summer experience.”

The programs also provide flexibility for children who want variety in their camp experience. Campers in grades 4-6 can participate in the Curiosity In Action activities for the first part of the day, and then transition to the Summer Fun program for the afternoon. Parents can also pick up children after a half day in Curiosity in Action.

Summer Fun will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Kids can enjoy pool time twice a day, Van Ess said, and they are treated to an occasional water slide. On sweltering days, children are able to socialize indoors in the computer and art rooms. The camp has been run at the school for nearly 20 years.

Curiosity In Action will also run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 12 class options, each a week long. The classes are run by school personnel, and most of the leaders at Summer Fun are former campers.

“The staff is very professional. They're well-educated, well-trained and a lot of fun to be with,’’ Van Ess said. “The kids run out happy. They enjoy coming to school and camp here. They don’t want to leave. They get hooked after the first week.”

Van Ess said children enjoy the familiarity of the camp. Many of them have been attending the camps at Fairfield Country Day since they were quite young.

“Parents and kids love it because the kids are with their friends,’’ Van Ess said. “There's so much to do! It's nice to have a place where campers can be themselves in an atmosphere that cares."
