Senior Charlie Capalbo, who plays goalie, was just diagnosed with cancer near his heart and lungs.

"He is a wonderful young man that just completed a great season," said a friend who set up a GoFundMe to help out his family.

The campaign's originator on Monday said his friend was "sitting up, chatting, checking his phone, and in good spirits" and "has been off pain meds for a while and not feeling like he needs them."

To date, $72,360 has been raised in the GoFundMe, which has a $95,000 goal.

A family member thanked supporters.

"Charlie is my nephew, and watching his extended family of hockey players, schoolmates and friends support him this way is just amazing. On behalf of my family, the warmest and most grateful thanks to you all," Nina C. Wilde posted.
