BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Spring has sprung, and the Greater Bridgeport Symphony will conclude its season with a ode to the season.

On April 22, the symphony closes out its 71st season with “GBS Celebrates Spring,” featuring guest conductor Jonathan Yates of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, who will solo on Bach’s iconic “Keyboard Concerto in D Minor.”

The evening, which opens at 8 p.m. at the Klein Auditorium, begins with Stravinsky’s “Dumbarton Oaks,” a concerto written in 1937 and named for the Washington, D.C., estate famed for its gardens.

“The music is incredibly fresh,” Yates said. “It's clean but energetic, modern but very approachable, and just delightful.”

Next up is Yates’ Bach performance.

“The D Minor keyboard concerto is one of my favorite works of his; I still have fond memories of hearing it for the first time, and just melting into the gorgeous slow movement,” he said. “It's also always a particular treat to play and conduct at the same time, to get to share all sides of my own musical personality.”

The concert concludes with the famous “Pastoral” – Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, familiar to millions from Disney’s “Fantasia.” Seen as the quintessential anthem of spring, the work’s movements convey different scenes in the country, replete with bird calls.

“After all the crazy winter weather we’ve had, this concert will be an incredible way to swing into spring,” says GBS Music Director and Principal Conductor Eric Jacobsen.

The programs for next season will be announced at this concert.

Tickets range from $15 to $59, and are available on the GBS website www.GBSO.org . For special Family Pack Deals, call the GBS office at 203-576-0263; parents get 15 percent off, and children under 19 get seats for just $10 each.
