'Station Eleven' Announced As 2015 'One Book One Town' Title

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Public Library, located on Post Road, is hoping to get people talking as it announced the town’s eighth annual One Book, One Town author and work on Thursday, Jan. 8.

New York Times’ Best Seller and 2014 National Book Award finalist “Station Eleven,” by Emily St. John Mandel, is this year’s selection.

“It is our hope that this book will inspire a community-wide conversation,” said Town Librarian Karen Ronald, Thursday.

“Station Eleven” is a book set both during and after a plague that wipes out nearly the entire world’s population.

Ronald described the novel as not fitting into one particular genre, making it an appealing book for a wide range of Fairfielders.

“The selection defies categorization and merges multiple genres,” Ronald Said. “Suspense, science fiction, dystopia… ['Station Eleven'] is also cited on dozens of top ten lists for 2014.”

Along with the announcement of the novel are events throughout the year that will connect with the book and its themes, she said. On that list are an evening with the author on March 31 and a civilization museum exhibit at the Fairfield Museum and Historical Society.

St. John Mandel’s appearance will be held at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University, as a part of its Open Visions Forum.
