Watch For 'The White Lady' Among The Guests At Monroe Cemetery Tour

MONROE, Conn. — Save Our Stepney is offering a pre-Halloween walking tour that’s not for the faint of heart — a lantern-lit stroll through a cemetery.

Spirit Master Kevin Daly will be your guide on a pre-Halloween cemetery tour in Monroe's Stepney section.

Spirits of Stepney Graveside Lantern Cemetery tour will step off in the Birdsey’s Plain/Stepney Cemetery on Oct. 27 and 29. Tours begin at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Friday and 6 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Spirit Master” Kevin Daly, a local historian and member of the Save Our Stepney Task Force, will be your guide as you check out the final resting places of some notable former Monroe denizens.

Thrill to the tales of a husband and wife who settled in Upper Stepney before the Revolutionary War, a Civil War private who was captured at the Battle of Chancellorsville and a woman who turned her dairy farm business into a nationally recognized enterprise.

Each tour-goer over 16 will be given a lantern to navigate the tour. Graves will be marked by jack-o-lanterns and artifacts and luminaria will light the way through the gravestones of the more than 1,400 deceased interred at the cemetery since 1794.

Not scared yet?

Perhaps “The White Lady” will make an appearance.

That’s right, this cemetery is said to be haunted by a spirit in a white dress with long black hair some swear they have seen floating through the graveyard or sitting atop a headstone.

Some say she was a femme fatale who was murdered after killing her husband. Others say she’s a woman who died in childbirth.

Either way — watch out.

Tour tickets are $15, free for children 12 and under. Reservations are strongly recommended.
