Bridgeport Bishop To Celebrate Mass Honoring Health-Care Workers

DANBURY, Conn. -- St. Peter Church in Danbury will celebrate the 21st annual White Mass for the Roman Catholic Bridgeport of Diocese to honor those who work in the health-care field.

The Mass is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, March 30, at St. Peter Church, 121 Main St., Danbury. Bridgeport Bishop Frank J. Caggiano will celebrate the Mass.

The Diocese of Bridgeport encompasses 400,000 Roman Catholics in Fairfield County. All are invited to the Mass. 

After the Mass, a breakfast will follow at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 18 Old Ridgebury Road, Danbury. Two people will be awarded the Father Rufin Compassionate Care Award at the breakfast. 

The two recipients of the award, to be named at the breakfast, are drawn from among the physicians, nurses, dentists, healthcare workers and healthcare volunteers in Fairfield County who exemplify the compassionate and loving care for the sick as exemplified by Father Rufin Kuveikis, a Capuchin Franciscan. He was chaplain at Norwalk Hospital for 18 years. He died in 2008 at age 86.

Dr. Sigurd H. Ackerman, president and CEO of Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, will be the featured speaker at the breakfast. Ackerman is a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist with expertise in eating disorders. He is a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University¹s College of Physicians and Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and The Society of Behavioral Medicine.
