Fairfield Customers Join The Fun At Harborview Market Celebration

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Harborview Market gave its annual holiday gift to its Black Rock neighbors by throwing its annual Christmas bash Sunday night. The holiday gathering was a pot luck supper that brought together a bunch of Black Rockers along with revelers from other Bridgeport neighborhoods as well as surrounding communities.

“This event started small, but every year it gets a little crazier,” said Enrique Torres, who owns the market with his wife, Michele. “And this year is the craziest yet!”

Torres thanked the attendees and said every year they have thrown the party, they have added a new rule for the partygoers.

“This year’s rule is: If you see someone you don’t know, say hello,” Torres, who is also one of Black Rock’s two City Councilmen, said to an enthusiastic round of applause.

The iconic Black Rock market is nothing if not eclectic. Customer's don't know what to expect on any given day at the market, known for its nontraditional come-as-you-are attitude.

For example, a customer may stroll in at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday for their morning coffee and suddenly be bolted to life by the strains of “When You’re Smiling,” by Louis Armstrong being played by a fellow customer tickling the ivory’s on the piano in the corner of the market.

On this night, however, the Christmas carols were being belted out with enthusiasm by Maureen Hamill, one of Fairfield County’s best known performers. It didn’t take long before a sing-along was underway.

Besides the music and holiday exuberance, food was very much the focal point of Sunday’s affair. At the pot luck supper, the array of food and wines ran the gamut from Brussels sprouts to shrimp to ham, and from wine and egg nog to cider. Food and drink were flowing.

“People love this place because it’s so laid-back and cool,” said longtime customer Geraldine Whitlock of Fairfield. “It’s always fun.”
