Every year, the chain convenience store hands out millions of free small Slurpees on July 11 -- or 7-11 to those of you fascinated by numbers. But this year has an extra bonus: July 11 kicks off a week of free drinks and snacks to celebrate the company’s 87th anniversary.

For three 12-year-old Fairfield residents on Friday, the opportunity to get free Slurpees was one they couldn’t pass by.

“It’s good on both sides,” said Robert. “We get the Slurpees, and they get the publicity of us telling our friends.”

His friends, Chris and Nicholas, agreed, saying they were excited to get a free drink of anything during a warm summer day.

“It’s hot out. It’s good to get the free Slurpee,” Chris said.

Each boy got their favorite flavor, lemonade or coke, and said they might come back later in the day for another one.

That is probably what 15-year-old Loni Mascia of Fairfield will do, too. She and her friend Meghan McElwee, 16, were walking to the beach when they stopped at the 7-Eleven.

“I go here a lot,” said Mascia, who admitted she’ll probably be back at the store several more times Friday for the free Slurpees.

“I think it’s a clever idea,” McElwee said when asked what she thought of drink giveaway event.

Derby resident Harold Reddick said he thought the whole thing was a joke when he heard about it on the radio. But when he stopped at the 7-Eleven on Friday morning, he was happy to realize it was true.

“I got all the flavors, layered, to taste them,” Reddick said.

The week of free drinks and snacks ends on Saturday, July 19, with another round of free small Slurpees.

The promotional event is held nationwide. You can also find 7-Eleven stores in Danbury and Norwalk.
