Fairfield Family Gets Allergy Relief

Fairfield’s Sarah Shokite calls dealing with her son’s health issues “a constant battle.” Not only does Nate, who turns 6 next weekend, have severe allergies, but he’s also mildly autistic. “Nate doesn’t understand why he’s always sick, and why he can’t go outside to play like other kids,” Shokite says.

But while inside his own home at least, Nate can breathe easier. A few months ago, Shokite heard about an Indoor Air Quality Contest sponsored by Gault Energy of Westport and decided to take a chance and enter. “But I never thought we’d win,” she says.

The Shokites were one of two deserving families who received a free AtmosAir system for their homes. The system uses bipolar ionization--or electrical currents--to scrub mold, bacteria, germs, pollen, dust, pet dander, chemicals and volatile organic compounds from the air. “When I got the good news, I was in tears I was so excited,” Shokite says. “All I could think of was that Nate’s breathing was going to be so much better.”

The contest was originally supposed to have just one winning family, but Gault found two families in such unique situations they decided not to choose between them. Along with the Shokites, Kelly Ryan and her 8-year-old son, Matthew, of Stratford also won an AtmosAir system. Matthew was born premature and has had a series of health problems since. About six months ago, the Ryans found out he was also allergic to dust mites, a common indoor allergen.

“Because of his health issues, we have to spend a lot of time indoors, and dust mites are everywhere inside the home, even if you keep your house really clean, as I do.” says Kelly.

Gault Energy president Sam Gault can relate. He launched the contest to tell more people about indoor air quality after having issues with his own daughter Jillian’s allergies. “Soon after we installed an AtmosAir system in our home, we noticed that Jillian’s symptoms improved and her asthma became easily regulated,” he said. “I’m so pleased to share this solution with two deserving Fairfield County families, and hope that, starting this week, Matthew and Nate will be able to enjoy the healthy childhood every child deserves.”
