The John Patrick Flanagan Foundation was established in memory of a Fairfield resident who died in 2008 from an aggressive form of cancer. Flanagan’s family and friends started the foundation to help children’s programs in the Fairfield area.
“We are committed to providing grants and resources to deserving organizations in our community and enjoy seeing how it positively impacts thousands of people’s lives every year, particularly children in need,” foundation chair Amanda Flanagan said in a news release. “In 2012, thanks to the incredibly generous support of our donors, we were able to award the highest level of funding to these amazing organizations, each of which has some special connection to John and his life."
The 2012 donations included a $7,860 grant to the Connecticut Audubon Society’s Center at Fairfield to continue funding the JPFF Trailblazers, a program that bring kids from Bridgeport’s public schools to the sanctuary for field trips. Bridgeport students also got help through a $7,500 grant to the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club’s Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in Black Rock, which will help hire a full-time teen counselor.
Other grants included a $2,500 donation to Lawyers for Children America for its work training children’s advocates in Fairfield County, a $1,000 contribution to Fairfield’s High School Scholarship Foundation, and a $2,000 donation to the Caroline House, which helps immigrant women and their children learn English.
“The various grants will directly support children in need and those who most look out for them – parents, teachers, coaches, youth organizations and public advocates,” Flanagan said. “We are grateful to everyone who has supported The John Patrick Flanagan Foundation to make these grants possible.”
