On Saturday, Oct. 25, McKinley School’s Parent Teacher Association hosted its fourth annual “Trunk or Treat” event.
Parents, neighbors and Halloween enthusiasts drove their cars, ambulances and pickup trucks to Fairfield Warde High School’s parking lot, to decorate their vehicles and hand out candy to children who went trick-or-treating a week early.
PTA Members Janine Jaeger and Jill Kellerman help to organize the event each year.
“We are two of the biggest Halloween freaks ever,” Kellerman said, laughing. “It started after Hurricane Sandy, when the downtown got destroyed.”
Four years ago, Trick or Treat on Safety Street - a Fairfield tradition originally hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, but now in the hands of Fairfield’s Kiwanis Club - was canceled, Kellerman said. They wanted to do something for their kids at McKinley to make up for it.
“We don’t look to make any money for the PTA for this event, we just look to break even,” Kellerman said. “It’s something we like to do for the community.”
The first year of Trunk-or-Treat was only for McKinley students, but the event was successful and has been held each year. The event is now open to any parents in the area who want to bring their kids out for some afternoon fun, Jaeger said.
“It’s fun and we love seeing all the kids in their costumes,” she said.
