Aquarion accepted hundreds of nominations from across the state in four categories: business, nonprofit organization, adult and student (grades nine-12). The awards recognize volunteer projects that have significantly contributed to the improvement of environmental quality through the protection, conservation, restoration and stewardship of Connecticut’s water, air, soils and plant and wildlife habitats, according to a press release.

The winning entries for 2015 are:

Business: PerkinElmer Inc. in Shelton; $2,500 grant to environmental nonprofit of its choice.

Nonprofit: Mill River Wetland Committee of Fairfield: $2,500 grant.

The Mill River Wetland Committee was formed in 1965 to strengthen local environmental science education and expand the public’s understanding and appreciation of the Mill River’s many contributions to the environment and the town’s quality of life, according to a press release.

Today, the committee operates a variety of in-depth educational programs that meet state standards for science education. It provides teacher manuals, in-class student materials and hands-on study trips into both riverine and estuarine environments for all Fairfield students, public and parochial, in grades three to six.

"For its many accomplishments in teaching children and the public at large about the river system and the need to understand, respect and protect its many functions, Aquarion is proud to name Fairfield’s Mill River Wetland Committee the recipient of the 2015 Environmental Champion award in the nonprofit category," according to a press release.

Adult: Shelley Harms of Norfolk; $2,500 grant to environmental nonprofit of her choice.

Student: Stefanie Milovic from New Fairfield High School; $1,000 award.

“As stewards of the environment, Aquarion constantly seeks new ways to preserve Connecticut’s natural beauty and resources,” Charles Firlotte, president and CEO of Aquarion Water Co., said in a press release. “We are pleased to recognize the businesses, individuals and organizations who share that goal and dedicate their time, energy and talents to these important initiatives.”
