Fairfield Nurse Brings Power To Patients

How much do you know about your medical records? Or your parents’? Sifting though files and dealing with doctors’ jargon can be a struggle for anyone. Fairfield’s Paula Rapp wants to help.

Paula saw a lot in her 16 years as a Registered Nurse. But one thing she was tired of seeing was patients not knowing how to best take care of themselves. That’s why she started her new business, Green Pear Health , out of her Fairfield home.

“What really inspired me was the lack of connection between the patient and the doctor, and really the lack of communication,” Paula says.

Paula’s new venture sells ready-to-fill binders to hold a person’s entire medical history. Too often she saw patients, especially older ones, who couldn’t help doctors fill out the basic information asked at the beginning of each doctor-patient relationship: medications and dosages, treatment records, family history and other vital information.

The binders will not only help doctors and nurses do their jobs, but will also “give patients more power,” according to Paula. The more people know about their own medical care, she says, the more a doctor-patient relationship becomes a conversation rather than a lecture.

“The more patients can understand their medical history and really own that part of their life, the stronger they are, and the better communicators they are,” Paula says. “Which ultimately leads to healthier outcomes.”

Paula’s most obvious targets are senior citizens, diabetics, cancer patients and other people who have many medical files to keep track of. But she thinks Green Pear’s product can be a great help to the younger people as well. She hopes it will also be a boon to children and caregivers, who might have to make tough decisions about their parents and patients.

“We’re sort of the ‘sandwich generation’ of people taking care of their young kids as well as their adult family members,” Paula says. “They can organize their entire family’s history, and make it easier on the entire family.”
