FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A free small coffee at McDonald’s surprised many in Fairfield on Monday morning and even brought in new customers.
This was the first time in years that Fairfield resident Ann Gilmer had gone to McDonald’s, and it was only because she had read a news article online about the free coffee.
“It’s not bad,” she said, speaking of the coffee. She added that she might not come back to the fast-food chain in the near future, but said she knows now that the coffee is good.
For others who are more regular drinkers of McDonald’s coffee, the promotion was a surprise.
Margaret Cole of Fairfield said she had no idea that the restaurant was having this promotion and said getting the free coffee was a great thing.
“I think it’s wonderful,” Cole said. She goes to the McDonald’s on the Post Road regularly for breakfast and on Mondays for a seniors bingo game. “And I like McDonald’s coffee.”
When Dolly Utziq of Fairfield heard about the promotion she got herself an iced coffee. “I’m not normally a coffee drinker,” she said, adding that she couldn’t help but take part in the promotion for free coffee.
As a former UPS driver in Fairfield, William Lugo of Stratford said he was offered free coffee frequently but didn’t always take it. “I have to like what I drink,” he said. “I’ve always liked McDonald’s coffee. It’s my favorite."
The promotion is a good one, said Fairfield resident Gary Mate, who goes to the McDonald’s most days for breakfast.
“Everyone likes something for free,” Mate said.
An employee at McDonald’s said the store had given away a lot of coffee already by 9 a.m. Monday, but said given the snowy weather, it wasn't as busy as usual. She said she expects more to come over the next two weeks for a free cup of joe as the promotion continues.
The corporate promotion was announced suddenly by McDonald’s on Friday as a response to Taco Bell's new fast-food breakfast lineup. A small coffee is free without any purchase and will last until Sunday, April 13.
