Carothers joined the staff of Greenfield Hill Church in the summer of 1990. Over those years, over 1,000 children have grown up under her guidance. With her direction, the education program for children and youths at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church has flourished.

Carothers designed a popular "learning center" approach to Sunday morning church school using everything from art to cooking to help kids learn the Bible stories. She also introduced a variety of children’s service projects as well as special vacation day activities.

Additionally, Vacation Bible School at Greenfield Hill Church didn't exist before she became director of Christian education. Carothers started the summer program with a handful of children gathered around a single table and grew Vacation Bible School to capacity (with a wait list) welcoming and engaging 120 kids and 35 teen counselors every August.

Carothers, her husband, Bill, and their four children, who were raised within Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, have been longtime members of Greenfield Hill Church.

Marcia has also been actively involved in Greenfield Hill Church’s denomination, the United Church of Christ, serving for many years as the registrar of the Fairfield East Association.
