Fundraisers Thank Fairfield For 'Little Blessings'

Kelly Weldon and Liz Tamarkin are co-chairs of the Fairfield County Duckie Derby , which took place Saturday afternoon along the Mill River in Fairfield.

Dear Editor,

Oftentimes, little blessings in life are overlooked as the world is busy bustling with technology, activities, errands and obligations. On Saturday we looked around at the Fairfield County Duckie Derby (FCDD) and saw so many “little blessings” that could easily be missed in our busy days. Volunteers from the community included Fairfield Prep guys who were busy with setup and security, The Bank of Fairfield employees were focused on face-painting and giving away balloons to toddlers; someone even spotted the bank's CEO snapping pictures to capture magical moments. Kohl’s volunteers were enthusiastically running children’s games, while Whole Foods Market staff were generously donating and running the concession stand. Our master of ceremonys, Charles Chiusano, wore a duck hat, a duck tie, a huge smile and a twinkle in his eye. He did an excellent job as he kept the crowd informed and entertained. The list of helpers goes on and on.

Little blessings: Father Dunn, a  wheelchair-bound priest from Westchester, made the drive down to bless the rubber ducks as they embarked on their race. Little blessing: The sun was out during the entire event and the rain held off until it was over. Little Blessing: A student at St. Catherine Academy had a Decorator Duck that won a prize ribbon. She was “over the moon” in delight! Little blessing: Two high school volunteers who helped with marketing, sales, recruitment  and more have siblings with special needs and they felt great helping a cause that helps kids with intellectual disabilities because it is near and dear to their hearts. Little blessings also include your reporters, who joined us for the day and provided excellent coverage. No doubt, we had wonderful people doing wonderful things because they care so much about children with special needs.

These little blessings add up to a big blessing. St. Catherine Academy will receive 100% of the Duckie Derby proceeds. This wonderful school will continue to provide excellent educational, life-skills and vocational services to students in our community with intellectual disabilities. These students continue to inspire us and motivate us to see the world as they do--full of little blessings, love and goodness.

Thank you to everyone who helped and or attended the Fairfield County Duckie Derby. We will be back again next year!
