To The Editor:
As a member of the RTM, I would like to thank the many Fairfielders who took the time this budget season to write and call their elected officials. I also appreciate the many personal and group discussions that I have had with people from all over town.
This will be my 11th budget vote, and this year is demonstrably different in terms of the public’s involvement. As of today, I have received over 1,200 emails from concerned citizens voicing their thoughts on what they think is in the best interest of our town. People have stopped me on the street and during sporting events to discuss their strong feelings on the budget.
This is a wonderful response from the citizens of Fairfield. Fairfielders are engaged in the debate and knowledgeable about what is happening. The overwhelming sentiment expressed is: “No further cuts to the budget – including education and town services!” This significant involvement and passion should go a long way toward convincing the elected members of the RTM that the services provided by the town are very important to the people who elected them.
This is about the quality of life we expect and are willing to pay for. As such, I will do whatever I can to keep both education and town services a top priority when the RTM starts its budget discussion next week.
I ask you to keep the lines of communication open and continue to make your concerns known to the elected officials in your district. Make them accountable to you – as your representatives -- for the way they vote on the budget.
Join us on April 28 for the preliminary budget discussion as well as on May 5 for the final vote.
RTM Minority Leader
District 7 Representative
