To the editor:
The Fairfield Public Library represents the heartbeat of our town. Young, middle-aged and older residents all congregate there, turning the library into a true 21st-century community center.
Where else can you enjoy a toddler’s reading program, acquire networking and job skills, see a museum exhibit without leaving town (thanks to Skype-a-Docent), partake in book groups, knitting groups, teen activities, borrow discount cards for local attractions, increase your financial acumen, all at no charge?
These, and many other activities, are available to every Fairfield resident. Sure, you expect a library to loan books, magazines and DVDs, and to offer computer access, but how about art shows in the Kershner Gallery, a seed-sharing service at the branch library, classical and jazz concerts in the historic Memorial Room? Did I mention that every one of these activities is free for Fairfield residents?
These myriad opportunities are free to use, but they aren’t free to produce. Every dollar budgeted to our library goes right back out into our community, so it seems more than short-sighted to cut the Fairfield Public Library’s budget.
The next budget season, please remember everything our library offers, and fully support the budget requests. Tell your elected representatives that you use and enjoy the available, free programs, then join us at our town community center, the Fairfield Public Library!
