To The Editor:
Watching the Tea Party Republican shutdown in Washington, I cannot help but compare it to certain actions taken by our local Republican majority on the RTM since their takeover in 2009.
Among the "greatest hits" of the Fairfield Republican RTM are the decimation of the town's contingency fund (forcing cuts to vital town services), a party line vote for an illegal voter plan (embarrassing Fairfield in court) and a silly campaign video that violated copyright laws. Really, Fairfield? Is this the best town governance we can get?
RTM Republicans and their leaders will tell you that they alone saved the town from a 6.4 percent tax increase. JUST NOT TRUE. Our Democratic First Selectman's initial estimate was just that - an estimate, and it was Selectman Tetreau's leadership and hard work that brought that estimate down. Then, in desperation to hold on to the mantle of “fiscal responsibility,” Republican RTM members pushed through even greater, if irresponsible, cuts. On the school side, how do you like paying for sports, bigger class sizes, fewer subjects? On the town side, do you feel safer with aging police and fire vehicles? Are you concerned about getting plowed this winter with trucks we can’t afford to maintain?
On Nov. 5, vote for an RTM that respects the law, and cares about the short and long-term good of all of Fairfield.
Protect our town. Save our schools. Vote Democratic on Nov. 5.
Balanced. Responsible. Leadership
