Letter: Women Voters Support Fairfield's TV Outlet

Since 2008, the Town of Fairfield has provided “public access” to town government by taping and airing town government and education meetings over Channels 79 and 78, respectively. And in March 2012, it got even better: live streaming of the four basics began for Boards of Finance, Selectmen, and Education, as well as RTM meetings. The hope, as time goes by, is to add the live streaming to Fair TV online, as well.

Yet annually, this most basic foundation of government—information—sits vulnerable waiting to find out if grants to fund its operation will be available—and in what amount—from an area council, vying with six other towns for support. No town budget support has historically been available.

Fair TV has proven valuable to Fairfield citizens. It is time to make it permanent by providing a budget line for its operation and development. This has been proposed by its Chairman, Jim Kennelly, and supported by the First Selectman, the Board of Selectmen, and the Board of Finance.

The Fairfield League of Women Voters has spent the last year studying the background and best practices of public-access television in Fairfield County and beyond. It commends and supports this proposal for providing Fair TV with the stability it needs to perform the vital tasks it provides to the Town of Fairfield and its citizenry.
