Jennifer Sargent was faced with a tough decision late last year. Should she continue to be a working woman, helping people find information? Or should she stay at home with her now 20-month-old daughter? In April, Jennifer decided to do both.
"It was a three-and-a-half-hour commute every day," Jennifer says of the trip from her Southport home to her New York City office. "It was just a little bit wearing, [especially] with a little one at home."
On Wednesday evening, Jennifer launched her website, Local Mom . The idea was to provide a place for young mothers like herself to find a wealth of information. It includes postings for upcoming events, listings of great places to take kids, book recommendations, restaurant reviews and links to other useful resources for moms. The site also features a forum where moms can exchange ideas and tips or just chat. And Jennifer plans to add a section specifically for stay-at-home dads as well.
Before starting the Local Mom website, Jennifer worked in knowledge management, which she describes as "a little bit of marketing, but mostly...connecting people with the right information." Because of this, she was able to handle all of the work for the site herself, from research all the way to page design.
Even though the site officially went live Sept. 22, her work is far from done. In addition to marketing aggressively through Facebook and Twitter, Jennifer says she's scouring the Internet to keep the information flowing.
"I'm a web junkie," Jennifer says. "It's just who I am. I'm always out there looking for content."
She plans to one day spread her site's reach across the country, even the world. But for the near future, she's content to let it live up to its name and keep it local. "We know Fairfield County," the Danbury native says. "And that's what makes us so good."
