The STAR program helps adults with developmental disabilities to obtain appropriate employment and supports them with job training and assistance as they continue to work.
“This program offers exciting opportunities to our clients as well as their new employers. It is an important step for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in becoming more independent, productive and socially integrated into their communities," said Katie Banzhaf, executive director of STAR.
"With Connecticut recognized as an Employment First state to support people with disabilities, these funds can benefit many qualified individuals eager for competitive employment in our communities. We are grateful to Near and Far Aid and to our local employers.”
With an ever-growing population of individuals qualified for competitive employment, coupled with cost of living demands and the challenges of the local economy and job market, the “My First Job” program will help STAR candidates develop job skills, time management skills and earn an income.
Companies who have participated in STAR’s supported employment program express satisfaction and enthusiasm about the reliability, eagerness, energy, and positive influence that these employees bring to the daily workplace.
