“After our community endured Storm Sandy and we mourned the tragedy in neighboring Newtown, it became evident how precious life is and how we must all do a better job in being kinder to others in whatever way makes even a small difference in someone else’s life,” Tetreau said in a press release. “By performing simple acts of kindness as often as we can, we serve as models for Fairfield’s children and we make our society better.”

The week was inspired by Fairfield resident Veronica Mollica, who wanted to teach her children that “kindness matters.” She contacted Tetreau, who issued a proclamation that encourages Fairfield residents to “create a community of kindness.”

All week, a banner will hang on Sherman Green commemorating the event, and local businesses will hand out bumper stickers with the slogan “kindness matters.” The town has also offered seven suggestions for different acts Fairfielders can try each day of the week:

Monday: Give a compliment to someone. Tuesday: Buy something for the person in the line behind you. Wednesday: Bring a treat to a neighbor or co-worker. Thursday: Reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while. Friday: Let someone go in front of you in line. Saturday: Volunteer for a Fairfield organization or non-profit. Sunday: Thank a Veteran you know for his/her service.
