Santa, Fairfield Firefighters Deliver for Charity

Santa Claus arrived early this year for about 100 Fairfield families, riding a shining red fire truck. But this Santa not only brought presents for hundreds of good girls and boys, he also helped raise thousands of dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Santa’s ride is part of the Fairfield Fire Department’s annual drive to raise money for the MDA. International Association of Firefighters Local 1426 uses a decommissioned truck to take Santa around to families in exchange for donations. This year they raised more than $9,400 for muscular dystrophy research.

“Our members take their own time away from families and friends to help out our own community as well as children with muscular dystrophy,” said Bob Smith, the union’s president. “This is a collective effort, but the looks in their eyes when we pull up to their house with Santa Claus makes it all worthwhile.”

The parents of each child supply the presents. Then a jolly Santa visits each contributor’s home. The parents also make a donation that goes toward the MDA’s annual Labor Day Telethon. The firefighters local hosts other events for MDA, including a barbecue at Trader Joe’s every summer. Anyone interested in information on next year’s Santa Express should call (203) 366-7055 or email Santa@iaff.org.
